Specialty Services

In addition to medical care, hospice offers a range of supportive services designed to address the emotional, spiritual, and social needs of patients and their families. These services include therapies such as pet therapy and music therapy, which bring comfort, reduce stress, and create meaningful moments during the end-of-life journey. Recognizing that children experience grief differently, our hospice program also offer specialized support for young people, including child-focused grief counseling and play therapy. These additional services enrich the hospice experience by honoring the whole person and supporting the entire family system.

Pet Therapy

Pet therapy, also known as animal-assisted therapy, can provide significant emotional and physical benefits for patients in hospice care. Interacting with trained therapy animals—typically dogs—can offer comfort, reduce anxiety, alleviate feelings of loneliness, and even help manage pain by triggering the release of endorphins. For patients facing the end of life, these visits often create moments of joy, companionship, and calm, especially when verbal communication becomes difficult. Pet therapy works by matching certified animals and handlers with patients based on need and preference. Sessions are typically brief and gentle, allowing patients to pet, hold, or simply sit with the animal in a soothing, nonjudgmental environment. This form of therapy supports overall well-being and can help foster a sense of peace and dignity in a patient’s final days.

Music Therapy

Music therapy is a powerful and supportive intervention in hospice care that helps patients find comfort, emotional expression, and connection during the final stages of life. Led by trained music therapists, sessions are personalized to each patient’s needs and may include listening to meaningful songs, singing, playing instruments, or simply being present with calming music. Music can help reduce pain perception, ease anxiety, improve mood, and support spiritual reflection. For patients who are nonverbal or withdrawn, music often becomes a way to communicate and reconnect with loved ones. The familiar rhythms and melodies can evoke memories, offer a sense of continuity, and provide peace, making music therapy a deeply humanizing and compassionate part of end-of-life care.

Child Play

Play therapy is a developmentally appropriate and effective approach to help children cope with grief, offering them a safe and supportive space to express feelings they may not yet have the words to articulate. Through guided play, which may include drawing, storytelling, role-playing, or using dolls and figurines, children can explore complex emotions like sadness, anger, confusion, and fear. The therapeutic setting is designed to be non-threatening and child-centered, allowing kids to process loss at their own pace. Play therapy helps children build emotional resilience, develop coping strategies, and restore a sense of control and security during a time of upheaval. Ultimately, it aims to promote healing, understanding, and emotional well-being by meeting children where they are—through play.

Fresh Flowers

The Petal Connection is an incredible group of volunteers who deliver joy to hospice patients and seniors in our community. Flowers are repurposed to create colorful bedside bouquets using flowers and vases that are donated from local grocers, florists, local floral growers, corporate events, weddings, and community members. Donated flowers are lovingly arranged into beautiful bouquets and delivered to those who need them the most! Such a simple gesture makes a big difference in our community. Spreading kindness . . . one petal at a time!
